Protecting the Scheduled Historic Buildings and Monuments of Pembridge. A Registered Charity No 1060265

Pembridge the Village - Pembridge has clearly seen many changes since its inception. The village pre-dates the Domesday book. A community has existed at this place for over 1000 years. At one point in its history the village exceeded Leominster in size and was an important centre of commerce during the mediaeval period. Following the Industrial Revolution, Pembridge appeared to "fall off the map" and economic activity declined. The village was left alone to continue its rural traditions in relative isolation and, as a consequence, much of its medieval character remained unspoiled.

Conservation of The Market Hall, Pembridge, Herefordshire.

Current State of the Market Hall.

The Market Hall dates from the early 16th century and the last major works were carried out on the building in 1927. Since then time and the elements have had a detrimental effect. Some of the key areas are detailed below.

The roof is not weather tight with water ingress at the south end causing damage. Some stone tiles are moss covered and many are suffering from de-lamination with broken heads at the point of the peg hole. Tiles have slipped and some are broken. The oak pegs which secure the tiles have become displaced throughout resulting in the tiles being held by friction rather than properly secured. The two finials on the ridge are heavily weathered.

The roof timbers (rafters, purlins and tie beams) show various signs of damage and decay and closer inspection once the roof tiles are removed is likely to reveal more. A large number of brackets were secured by bolts and strap work carried out in the 1927 works. There are signs of heavy decay to the mortice and tenon joints which is resulting in shoulder failure.

There are eight timber posts supporting the roof and all show weathering. In 1927, one post was replaced, one repaired and metal dowels set in stone plinths inserted. There is severe rust where decay has exposed the metal dowels to the elements. The posts are notched at low levels where cross rails were once located.

The earth floor is well worn, uneven and has been patched with inappropriate materials. There is erosion around the perimeter due to rainwater run-off from the roof.
