Protecting the Scheduled Historic Buildings and Monuments of Pembridge. A Registered Charity No 1060265

Pembridge the Village - Pembridge has clearly seen many changes since its inception. The village pre-dates the Domesday book. A community has existed at this place for over 1000 years. At one point in its history the village exceeded Leominster in size and was an important centre of commerce during the mediaeval period. Following the Industrial Revolution, Pembridge appeared to "fall off the map" and economic activity declined. The village was left alone to continue its rural traditions in relative isolation and, as a consequence, much of its medieval character remained unspoiled.

A grant of £16,613 has been given to the Pembridge Amenity Trust by the Countryside Agency to investigate the nature and origins of the structure that stood on the mound behind the parish church.

The grant will also make it possible to complete a "dendro-chronology" survey (timber dating) of the older houses in the village. Experts have said that the survey could prove to be of national importance when it comes to understanding the structure and development of mediaeval villages.

The grant has been made possible thanks to a dedicated group of villagers who have cleared the moat of undergrowth and debris over the past twelve months. We would like to mention the efforts of Tony Norman, Chris Buchan, Charles Whiteford, Henry Elwell and, in particular, our young helpers Glenn Firkins and Stefan Mann. The help and cooperation of Arthur and Richard Jenkins is much appreciated too.

The grant application was prepared by Alan Stokes and Alan Bramwell with the help and guidance of the county archaeologist Dr. Keith Wray who is now resident in the village.
