EXTRACTS FROM THE REPORT
| The site
to the east of the moated area is potentially of considerable
significance. Its topographical location and proximity to the
moated site may suggest that it is either contemporary with
or even pre-dates the construction of the moat. The presence
of the holloway also indicates the one time importance of this
part of the village as a major routeway. It may represent the
southern continuation of Bridge Street, linking the centre of
Pembridge with Lower Bearwood. If this were the case, the holloway
would form the southern arm of the principal crossroads within
the village. The fact that this appears to have fallen into
disuse at a relatively early point in the development of medieval
Pembridge (as suggested by the location of the market place)
indicates a likely medieval date for this feature |
