EXTRACTS FROM THE REPORT

The geophysical
data from area 2 strongly suggests that there was at least
one substantial structure placed upon the levelled platform.
This appears to have been either a very substantial building
possibly with a cobbled or other type of stone floor, or a
yard surface which may have been surrounded by timber structures.
The relationship between this structure and the moated site
is unclear. It may represent some form of outer enclosure
or bailey which was either contemporary with or added to the
moated site. Alternatively it may indicate that the moated
site was cut into the levelled platform to take advantage
of the high ground and the structure pre-dates the construction
of the moated site. Irrespective of exactly when the structure
in Area 2 existed it is clearly of considerable antiquity.
Its location on the platform and its proximity to the church
suggest that this was associated with a building of some importance.
The presence
of a now lost holloway, (C on figure 6) illustrates just how
long this area has been used. The fact that it appears to
lead to or from the church may be of some significance.
