Protecting the Scheduled Historic Buildings and Monuments of Pembridge. A Registered Charity No 1060265

Pembridge the Village - Pembridge has clearly seen many changes since its inception. The village pre-dates the Domesday book. A community has existed at this place for over 1000 years. At one point in its history the village exceeded Leominster in size and was an important centre of commerce during the mediaeval period. Following the Industrial Revolution, Pembridge appeared to "fall off the map" and economic activity declined. The village was left alone to continue its rural traditions in relative isolation and, as a consequence, much of its medieval character remained unspoiled.

"The History and Heritage of Pembridge: Interim report on the tree-ring analysis of ten houses"
Report Number ARCUS 574q
Compiled by Ian Tyers
Date September 2002

Ian takes a core sample from "The Garth"

A total of 47 timbers were selected for tree-ring sampling from the ten buildings, with 3 cores (from 2 buildings), 4 (from 1 building), 5 (from 5 buildings) or 6 (from 2 buildings) being taken in each property. To prevent later confusion a single sample series was used for the entire project, the project samples are numbered 1-47 inclusive. The sampling attempted to encompass as wide a range of elements as possible within each building, where less samples were taken, relatively fewer suitable timbers were accessible within the structure. Upon analysis a total of 25 of the samples were found to be datable with between 1 and 5 timbers being dated from every sampled building, this overall level of success is both unexpectedly good and quite gratifying. The following sections discuss the results and dendrochronological interpretation of each sampled building (the buildings are arranged in alphabetical order of the building name, and are in no geographic, chronological or other order).
