Old Stores, Market Place (RCHM 42, SMR 16376)
Discussion
As with the previous building, the results indicate that this
phase of material should not have been considered as part
of this current project. There is little doubt that the main
structure is of 15th century date so these late 16th century
joist timbers are dating the floor or a repair to the floor
perhaps associated with one of the many re-organisations of
the structure. It is worth noting that the only datable timbers
that were sampled do not contain empty mortises for jetty
brackets, this of course only became apparent after sampling
and analysis. Assessment of the rest of the structure suggests
that the original timbers throughout the cross-wing are of
marginal suitability, if they are suitable at all, for dendrochronological
analysis.
