Old Stores, Market Place (RCHM 42, SMR 16376)
Description
This building occupies an important elevated site overlooking
the market place. It contains the substantial remains
of the upper cross wing only of a medieval hall house
that has been embraced on two sides by at least three
major phases of later building. The focus of this report
is on the cross-wing rather than investigate the later
phases in any great detail. In any case most of the timbers
in this property were too fast grown to be considered
suitable for sampling. A group of apparently suitable
timbers were located as joists from the decorative bressummer,
located under the oriel, running to the west. At the time
of sampling these were considered to be integral to the
cross-wing structure but it has subsequently been observed
that the dated timbers relate to a repair to the floor. |
