Fig Tree House/Grosmont House, East Street (RCHM 15, SMR 16366)
Results
Three of the samples proved unusable, the last sample, from
the cruck directly below the scarf however contained plenty
of rings and included the complete sapwood and the original
bark surface. The sequence from this sample was compared with
medieval and post-medieval oak sequences from throughout England,
Wales, and elsewhere in Europe. It was apparent that this
sequence matched a number of independent reference chronologies
at a single consistent position. This position was checked
visually and appears to be a reliable match. The correlation
of the sequence to other oak reference chronologies indicates
a date of AD1324-1424 inclusive for the rings in the sample.
Interpretation
The interpretation here is simple, the final ring under the
bark is complete indicating this timber was felled some time
between the late autumn of AD1424 and the onset of growth
in the spring of AD1425.
